Marking a significant milestone in Cambodia-Malaysia connectivity, Cambodia Airways officially launched a new direct flight route between Phnom Penh and Penang.

The announcement came at a high-profile event organised by the Malaysia Business Chamber of Cambodia (MBCC) on Friday, celebrating the enduring cultural and economic ties between the two nations.

The launch ceremony was jointly witnessed by top executives of Cambodia Airways, the Malaysian Ambassador to Cambodia, MBCC President Oknha Tan Khee Meng, representatives from Tourism Malaysia, and other VIP guests.

“This new direct route is more than a convenient travel option—it is a bridge that connects people, cultures, and economies,” said a Cambodia Airways spokesperson, highlighting the airline’s commitment to boosting regional connectivity.

“The Phnom Penh-Penang route will not only enhance tourism and business opportunities but also deepen the friendship between our two countries.

“The new flight is expected to attract both leisure and business travellers, particularly as Penang continues to grow as a major hub for culture, medical tourism, and commerce in Malaysia.

“It also marks a strategic move by Cambodia Airways to expand its regional network amid rising demand for direct international links.”

Oknha Tan Khee Meng praised the initiative as a symbol of the growing cooperation between Cambodia and Malaysia.

“This flight signifies the tangible progress in our bilateral relationship. It will help foster even more exchanges—not just goods and services, but culture, tourism, and friendships,” he said during his speech at the celebration.

“I believe Malaysia, with its diverse offerings, is well-positioned to strengthen its appeal as a preferred destination for Cambodian travellers. Through proper tourism promotion, and with support from our business communities and agencies, I am confident we can further grow these people-to-people ties.”

Shaharuddin Onn, Malaysian Ambassador to Cambodia, also emphasised the importance of people-to-people ties in regional diplomacy.

“What we are witnessing is a testament to how connectivity fuels mutual understanding and prosperity. This new route opens up fresh possibilities for Malaysians and Cambodians alike.”

He also noted that the new route between Phnom Penh and Penang will further increase interconnectivity between Cambodia and Malaysia.

“This new route marks an exciting milestone. I believe it will unlock new opportunities for both Cambodia and Malaysia—not only in terms of connectivity and tourism, but also for trade and business development,” Ambassador Shaharuddin said.

Air Asia, AirAsia Cambodia, Cambodia Airways and Malaysia Airlines operate direct flights between Kuala Lumpur and Cambodia’s Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Preah Sihanouk.

Last year, approximately 54,000 Cambodians visited Malaysia while the Kingdom, during the same period, received 59,714 Malaysian visitors.
