The spirit of Eid al-Fitr, known as Hari Raya Aidilfitri in Malaysia, transcended borders as the Malaysian Business Chamber of Cambodia (MBCC) joined hands with the Embassy of Malaysia in Phnom Penh to organise a vibrant Raya Open House celebration on Saturday.
Held at the esteemed Dewan Malaysia within the embassy grounds, the event aimed to bring together Malaysians and friends of Malaysia residing in Cambodia to partake in the joyous festivities reminiscent of home. This also marked the first ever celebration to be presided over by the Malaysian Ambassador designate Shaharuddin Onn.
Hari Raya Aidilfitri is a significant cultural and religious holiday for Muslims, marking the end of the month of Ramadan with prayers, feasting, and the spirit of forgiveness and reconciliation. For Malaysians abroad, it often evokes a sense of longing for the cherished traditions and warm gatherings shared with loved ones back home.
The Raya Open House celebration, held from 10:30am to 2:30pm, welcomed guests from diverse backgrounds to immerse themselves in Malaysian culture and hospitality, while attendees were encouraged to don the traditional “Baju Raya” attire, adding a touch of authenticity to the festive ambiance.

The event was not just about commemorating a religious occasion; it was a cultural exchange filled with delectable Malaysian dishes, each bite invoking memories of home-cooked flavours. From satay, rendang, and nasi minyak to the favourite Malaysian dessert cendol, the spread catered to every palate, ensuring that attendees felt a sense of comfort and belonging.
One of the highlights of the celebration was the opportunity for Malaysians and their friends to reconnect and forge new bonds in a foreign land. Families and friends gathered to exchange stories, share laughter, and create lasting memories, fostering a sense of community and unity amidst the diversity of Phnom Penh.
In the spirit of inclusivity, the organisers encouraged attendees to extend the invitation to their Malaysian compatriots and friends, emphasising the importance of solidarity and togetherness, especially during festive occasions when being away from home can feel particularly poignant.
Welcoming the participants from all walks of life, Oknha Tan Khee Meng, President of MBCC, said the Raya Open House transcends a mere social gathering; it embodies the lively essence of Malaysian hospitality and multiculturalism.
As the festivities drew to a close, there was a palpable sense of gratitude and contentment among the attendees. The Raya Open House celebration had succeeded in bringing a piece of Malaysia to Phnom Penh, uniting hearts and spirits in celebration and camaraderie.
“Even though we may be far from home, events like these remind us that the spirit of Hari Raya knows no boundaries. It’s about coming together as one big family, regardless of where we are,” Ambassador designate Shaharuddin Onn said.
According to the Malaysian Embassy, there are more than 5,000 Malaysians residing across the Kingdom, with Phnom Penh alone having more than 2,000, while over 500 companies are operating in the country.
