Considering the threats posed by cyberattacks in the world, the Malaysian Business Chamber of Cambodia (MBCC) organised a forum themed “Embracing Cybersecurity in Combating Cybercrime” on Wednesday in Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra.
The event was presided over by Chea Vandeth, Minister of Post and Telecommunications, while Datuk Eldeen Husaini Mohd Hashim, Malaysian Ambassador to Cambodia, was the guest of honour.
The forum saw discussion over several cybersecurity and cybercrime issues attended by experts from prominent technology and financial industry companies such as Smart, Ezecom, Huawei, AIA, Edotco, LGMS, which were also the sponsors of the event.
Oknha Tan Khee Meng, president of MBCC, said during his opening remarks that cybersecurity and cybercrimes are heated problems faced by countries, including Cambodia and Malaysia, which thus required extra attention from the governments, relevant entities and private sectors to create strong defence to protect data and information.
“Information technology has advanced rapidly in the past two decades,” he said.
“However, every advancement also brings in the new side effects. Almost 60% of major enterprises have increased their investment on Cybersecurity.”
“The cybercrimes pose threats to the nations, organisations and companies across the world, and many people are victimised in cybercrimes. Nevertheless, I believe that the issue of cybersecurity will never stop our region’s advancement in IT. Therefore, we have to be proactive and overcome the challenges,” he added.
Vandeth said that he appreciates MBCC’s effort in organising the forum on internet security, which is now more important than ever for both individuals and organisations.
“The forum today is specifically designed for organisations to be able to adopt strong and realistic cybersecurity approach to cope with the current rise in cybercrimes,” he said.
“In fact, attacks to critical information infrastructures made up the most common headlines in the past years. Financial, healthcare and information were among the top targeted sectors for the first half 2021,” he added.
Vandeth said that with the emergence of new technologies ,such as Artificial Intelligence and Visual Reality, cybercrimes are becoming harder to combat than ever.
“It requires us to become more cautious with our online activities and surrounding devices,” he said.
Ambassador Eldeen Husaini called for more cooperation between Cambodia and Malaysia in combating cybercrimes.
“Cyber is the internet, and crime is human,” he said. “While the internet is borderless, it is up to all of us to guard ourselves against these crimes.”
Apart from receiving knowledge and tips in embracing cybersecurity and combating cybercrimes, dozens of participants also enjoyed Chinese cuisine served at the networking event.
