Khmer Times - MBCC to organise forum on cybercrime next week

Cyberattacks have been rapidly increasing across the world and the global cost of cybercrime is expected to reach $10.5 trillion by 2025.

The latest to face cyberattacks were the websites of more than a dozen US airports. The websites were temporarily brought offline by cyberattacks on October 10.

Considering the threats posed by cyberattacks in the world, the Malaysian Business Chamber of Cambodia (MBCC) will organise a forum ‘Embracing Cybersecurity in Combating Cybercrime’ on 26 October in Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra.

Dr. Chea Vandeth, Minister of Post and Telecommunications will preside the event and Datuk Eldeen Husaini, Malaysian Ambassador to Cambodia will be the guest of honour, the organisers told Khmer Times.

“MBCC sees that is a need to create awareness for enterprises to pay attention to cybercrimes. It is important for private sectors to work hand in hand with cyberspace regulators, industrial leaders, and cybersecurity experts to achieve and form the defence against cyberattacks,” Oknha Tan Khee Meng, president, MBCC, told Khmer Times.

He said cybercrimes pose a grave threat to nations, organisations, and individuals across the globe.

“It has become widespread in many parts of the world, and millions of people are victims of cybercrimes. Given its serious nature and implications, it is clear that there is a crucial need for a common understanding of such criminal activity internationally to deal with it effectively,” the MBCC president added.

He said the topic of discussion at the forum include ‘Embracing Cybersecurity’ and ‘Combating Cybercrime’.

The forum is expected to discuss several cybersecurity and cybercrime issues that would be beneficial for financial institutions and commercial enterprises.

The sponsors and speakers are from prominent technology and financial industry companies such as Smart, Ezecom, Huawei, AIA, Edotco, LGMS.

The entry fees for MBCC members are $30 while guests and non-members can attend the event for $55.

Leading cybersecurity solution company LGMS will provide a complimentary cyber security scorecard risk report of approximately 50 pages to the first 30 companies who register for five seats and above.

The panel discussion starts at 6pm followed by the dinner at 7.30pm.

Meanwhile, a report Kaspersky said phishing incidents continue to surge in South-east Asia with more than half of them targeting users in Malaysia, the Philippines, and Vietnam in the first half of 2022.

Four out of six countries from South-east Asia — Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam — saw phishing attacks exceeding last year’s activities, it said in a statement recently.

Experts pointed out that the countries across the world have been adopting different steps to tackle the growing menace of cyberattacks and associated crimes.

The Singapore government has set up an inter-agency counter-ransomware task force this year.

The number of ransomware cases in Singapore has increased by 54 per cent between 2020 and 2021.

Participating entities include CSA, the Government Technology Agency, the Infocomm Media Development Authority, the Monetary Authority of Singapore, the Singapore Armed Forces and the Singapore Police Force.
