MBCC leads the way in CSR and ESG among foreign business chambers

The Malaysian Business Chamber in Cambodia (MBCC) has transformed from a traditional networking hub into Cambodia’s leading foreign business chamber, championing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Driven by a commitment to the Kingdom’s development, MBCC has embedded Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles into its core operations, directly impacting local lives.

For nearly three decades, MBCC operated primarily to connect businesses and foster economic relationships.

However, the hardships brought by the COVID-19 pandemic triggered a major strategic shift. Under the leadership of President Oknha Tan Khee Meng, elected in 2021, the chamber formally established CSR and ESG initiatives as vital corporate pillars to support vulnerable communities.

MBCC made history by becoming the first foreign business chamber to actively fund and advocate for national demining efforts. In 2022, MBCC organised a high-profile Charity Gala Dinner that raised $77,700 for clearing explosive remnants of war.

In partnership with Khmer Times and Wing Bank, MBCC launched the 4,000-Riel Campaign, a micro-donation initiative allowing ordinary citizens to contribute directly to the Cambodian Mine Action Authority (CMAA). The funds facilitated the full clearance of one commune and four villages, returning safe, arable agricultural land to hundreds of rural families.

Beyond demining, MBCC maintains localised relief campaigns across the country. The chamber routinely organises essential supply drops, delivering food, water, and instant noodles to military personnel stationed in remote border areas, such as Oddar Meanchey Province. By stepping in during a time of heightened tension, the chamber reaffirmed the importance of unity between the private sector and those who serve on the front lines.

“Supporting the soldiers is not only a gesture of gratitude but also a responsibility we share as a community,” said Malathi Mohan, an MBCC representative. “When our defenders are strong, our nation is strong.”

“This donation is a small gesture to show our deep respect and appreciation for the tireless efforts of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces to help alleviate the challenging conditions,” she added.

The chamber honours its members’ contributions, awarding the “MBCC ESG ICON” to corporations that uphold sustainable investments, green infrastructure, and community advancement.

MBCC President Oknha Tan Khee Meng said MBCC has evolved from a small, close-knit group of pioneering Malaysian investors into one of the most authoritative, structurally sound foreign business chambers in the Kingdom of Cambodia. Its legacy, he stressed, is inextricably linked with Cambodia’s post-conflict reconstruction and its subsequent rise as one of the fastest-growing economies in the ASEAN region.

“While we are operating businesses in Cambodia, with many of our members finding a second home here, it is crucial that we give back to society and contribute to the Kingdom’s path to prosperity,” he said.

Oknha Tan added that MBCC is also focusing on green energy and sustainable infrastructure, which align with the Cambodian government’s Pentagonal Strategy.

“Underlying these initiatives is a commitment to environmental, social and governance criteria,” he said. “We will prove that economic synergy between our two nations is not just about financial returns but about building an inclusive, technologically advanced and socially responsible future for the people of Malaysia and Cambodia.”
