Synopsis: Nearly 300 guests gather in Phnom Penh to mark the start of a new lunar cycle with calls for economic reform and inclusivity.

The Malaysian Business Chamber in Cambodia (MBCC) celebrated the Year of the Fire Horse, bringing together nearly 300 business leaders and diplomats to urge a “cleansing” of unethical business practices in the Kingdom on Saturday.

The festivities highlighted the chamber’s commitment to unity and resilience within Cambodia’s evolving economic landscape.

In his address,, MBCC President Okhna Tan Khee Meng reflected on the volatility of 2025. He cited geopolitical tensions, shifting tariff policies, and border frictions as major disruptions to supply chains and cross-border trade.

Tan spoke about the harmful effect of online scams on Cambodia’s investment climate, banking sector, and recruitment efforts.

Tan praised members for their perseverance and strong belief in Cambodia’s potential. He described the Year of the Fire Horse, which started on February 17, as a crucial time for economic renewal.

“We look to this as a year of great cleansing,” Tan said. “Like a forest fire, it clears stagnant or harmful elements to allow new growth.”

Tan lauded the government’s continuous nationwide crackdown on online scams and broader economic reforms. He contended that these measures are vital to eradicate illegal and dishonest practices, thus paving the way for high-quality tourism, long-term investment, and sustainable growth.

“This is an opportunity to reset and reclaim dignity,” Tan added.

The event, attended by Malaysia’s Ambassador to Cambodia, Shaharuddin Onn, also highlighted the chamber’s commitment to inclusivity. Since the lunar celebration coincided with the holy month of Ramadan, the dinner timetable was adjusted to allow Muslim members to break fast.

Ambassador Shaharuddin encouraged Malaysian expatriates to register with the embassy for better communication during emergencies and to take an active role in community events.

“Even far from home, Malaysians continue to celebrate, respect, and unite in our diversity,” Ambassador Shaharuddin said.

The evening featured traditional festivities, including a lion dance, the yee sang prosperity toss, and a karaoke contest. The grand prize for the night’s lucky draw was a mobile phone valued at $1,999.

The Year of the Fire Horse, running until February 5, 2027, is traditionally associated with high energy, speed, independence, and significant changes in career and relationships.

As one of the oldest business chambers in Cambodia, the MBCC organises the annual gatherings to foster professional relationships and celebrate cultural diversity among its members.
