Malaysia Independence Day is marked on August 31 every year – the day the nation gained independence from colonial rule.

The event was attended by diplomats, senior government officials, industry leaders, members of various chambers and representatives of Malaysian businesses in the Kingdom.

Delivering his opening remarks, Tan Khee Meng, MBCC President, said the day also marks the 68th year of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and Cambodia.

“Both countries celebrate deep bonds of friendship with Asean unity in focus,” he pointed out.

Shaharuddin Onn, Malaysian Ambassador to Cambodia, said Malaysia is a perfect epitome of unity despite having people with different ethnicities and religions.

Focusing on ASEAN unity, he emphasised the role played by Malaysia in bringing about the ceasefire following the border conflict between Cambodia and Thailand.

Buon Sarakmony, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Commerce, who attended the event as the high representative of Cham Nimul, Minister of Commerce, stressed the active presence of Malaysian businesses in Cambodia alongside growing bilateral trade between the two countries.

“Malaysia is Cambodia’s fifth largest trading partner and one of the major sources for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the Kingdom. We expect the trade relations to further flourish in the coming days.”
